Collections

The NFMK is a cultural space to represent Korean living culture by collecting, preserving and researching related materials. The NFMK has been putting great efforts to acquire comprehensive collections on nationally listed living culture, particularly representing different times and regions. In addition the Museum actively acquires folk materials which soon to be disappeared due to urbanization and regional development projects, by means of purchase, donation, and deposition. The Museum has acquired a vast collections consisting of 113,343 items on folk materials covering the Korea's living history.

『Collections Catalogue of the National Folk Museum of Korea』 is one of the comprehensive fruits of the Museum's collecting activities and promoting the value of folk materials in Korea. The Museum selected 638 items from its collections, introduced clothing-food-housing culture, livelihood, family & education, religions, entertainment and games, craftsmanship, funerary customs, ceremonial customs under the basic theme of 'Lives of Korean', and promoted continuous transmission of Korean living culture as well as artistic and academic value of collected materials.

The NFMK's collections can be partly presented at permanent and special exhibition but collections in storage are not usually accessible. By publishing this catalogue, the Museum can introduce representing folklike collections to the public.

Since the Museum's collections of living culture, contain first-hand interpretation on actual living places and people, they are as precious collections as any other collections of masterpieces. Although this publication seems quite insignificant and simple, it reflects the Museum's missions statement which is to represents dynamic and various aspects of Korean's living culture.
